Hazardous Location Motors
Understanding Hazardous Location Motors for Safe Operations
A hazardous-location motor is specified from the area classification, not from a general-purpose IE3 leaflet. Zone / Division, gas or dust group, temperature class, Ex marking and the driven machine come first. JWMotor then quotes a custom IEC three-phase machine around that nameplate — kW, poles, voltage, frequency and mounting — instead of selling a stock YE3 as an Ex motor.
Send the area classification (or the Ex string on the old plate), kW or hp, poles, volts, frequency, foot or flange, and a nameplate photo to contact JWMotor. If the duty is ordinary S1 in a safe area, that is a different page — start from YE3.
What to send
- Zone / Division and gas or dust group
- Temperature class or the Ex marking on the old plate
- kW or hp, poles, voltage, frequency, foot or flange
- Nameplate photo — custom IEC quote, not a stock YE3 SKU
Terms
- Area classification
Zone 0/1/2 (gas) or 20/21/22 (dust), or Class/Division, plus group and T-class. This is the duty. The JW frame is sized after it.
- Nameplate
kW, poles, volts, Hz, mounting and the Ex string. A photo is enough to start the quote.
- Custom IEC
Missing leaflet row is expected on classified duty. We design the winding and enclosure path around the plate.
FAQ
Do you stock ATEX / Ex motors off the leaflet?
No stock Ex SKU. We quote a custom IEC machine from the classification and the nameplate. That is still a normal JW enquiry.
What must the enquiry include?
Zone or Division, gas/dust group, T-class or Ex marking, kW or hp, poles or r/min, voltage, frequency, mounting, and a nameplate photo.
Can a YE3 replace an Ex motor?
Not as a drop-in. A safe-area YE3 does not carry the Ex marking. Only use YE3 when the install is not classified.
What if we only have the old plate?
Send a photo. We read kW, poles and mounting from the plate and ask for the missing Zone / group / T-class before quoting.
Stock or custom
If this is not a JW stock leaflet motor, we still quote custom windings, voltages, mountings and special duty. Write voltage and frequency (and whether the supply is single-phase or three-phase), kW or hp, speed or poles, foot or flange, and attach a nameplate photo.
