10 Hp Single-Phase Motor: Custom Solutions and Alternatives

A 10 horsepower single-phase motor is about 7.5 kW on a one-phase supply. Compressors, saws and small pumps still use this size when the building has no three-phase. Starting current is high, so factories usually move the same load onto three-phase.

JWMotor’s published motors are IEC three-phase machines (YE3, Y2 and related). We do not print a 10 hp capacitor-start motor as a stock leaflet. That does not mean we ignore the enquiry. If your building already has three-phase, we quote a 7.5 kW YE3 at the same speed as the old machine. If you truly have only single-phase, write that clearly — we can look at a custom winding, a VFD on a three-phase motor, or tell you honestly when we are the wrong factory.

Send voltage, frequency, 1-phase or 3-phase, hp or kW, poles or r/min, mounting, and a nameplate photo to contact us.

What to do next

  • Look at the starter: one phase or three
  • 10 hp ≈ 7.5 kW on an IEC quote
  • Three-phase already in the plant → YE3, same poles as the driven machine
  • Only single-phase → custom enquiry, not a silent YE3 swap

Horsepower (hp) vs kilowatt (kW)

Horsepower is a US/imperial size. IEC nameplates use kilowatts. A rough conversion is 1 hp ≈ 0.75 kW, so 10 hp is about 7.5 kW. The numbers will not match to three decimals; for a quote, 7.5 kW plus poles and volts is enough.

Single-phase vs three-phase

Single-phase is the supply in most houses and small shops (two live conductors, typically 220–240 V). Three-phase is the supply in factories (three live conductors, often 380–415 V). A motor is wound for one or the other. A three-phase YE3 will not start on a single-phase breaker by itself.

Starting current

When a motor starts across the line, it draws several times its running current for a short time. On single-phase, a 10 hp machine hits the supply hard — lights dip, breakers trip, generators struggle. That is why plants move this size onto three-phase, or use a soft starter / VFD.

Capacitor-start (and capacitor-run)

Many single-phase motors use a capacitor to create a start winding. That is a different internal layout from an IEC three-phase squirrel-cage motor. Matching only the horsepower number does not make the shaft, feet or capacitors the same.

FAQ

Do you stock a 10 hp single-phase motor?

Not as a standard leaflet. Our catalogues are three-phase IEC. We still want the enquiry: many sites that search “single-phase” actually have 380 V three-phase in the room. If you only have 220 V single-phase, say so and ask for custom.

I have three-phase. What do I order?

About 7.5 kW, the same poles (or r/min) as the machine, voltage/frequency, and foot or flange. YE3 is the usual IE3 motor.

Will a three-phase motor run on single-phase?

Not by wiring it straight to a single-phase breaker. A VFD or phase converter can feed a three-phase motor from single-phase, but that is a designed package, not a spare-part trick.

Can you customise voltage or mounting anyway?

Yes. Custom is normal for OEM lots: special voltage, shaft, flange, tropicalisation. Use the contact form and treat this page as the explanation, not as a “we don’t do that” dead end.

Stock or custom

If this is not a JW stock leaflet motor, we still quote custom windings, voltages, mountings and special duty. Write voltage and frequency (and whether the supply is single-phase or three-phase), kW or hp, speed or poles, foot or flange, and attach a nameplate photo.
