ABB replacement IEC motor

ABB replacement IEC motor

Replacing a ABB motor means matching an IEC metric machine to the installed nameplate, not ordering ABB spare parts. Plates in this family are often M2BA, M3BP and other IEC general/process-performance nameplates. JW quotes Y2/YE3/YE4 (and YVF2/YEJ when the duty needs them) when kW, poles, frame, shaft and voltage line up.

Default starting point is YE3. Process-performance or Ex / marine nameplates are not a standard YE3 quote. Match enclosure and duty first.

How a drop-in is decided

  • Read kW, V, Hz, poles or r/min, and frame from the plate—not the logo
  • Confirm H, feet or flange (B3/B5/B35), shaft diameter and key
  • Keep poles unless the driven machine is being re-specified
  • Move to IE3 (YE3) only when the project allows it; stay IE2 (Y2) for a like-for-like spare

Which JW series to enquire

  • YE3 (IE3) — usual quote when a general-purpose S1 machine can move to IE3 in the same IEC frame family.
  • Y2 (IE2) — stay here if the spare must remain IE2 or the driven machine is lightly loaded.
  • YVF2 — inverter / VFD supply; a standard TEFC is not automatically inverter-duty.
  • YEJ — integral brake. R/F/K/S — helical gearmotor, not a bare motor.

When it will not drop in

  • Same frame number, different shaft or key
  • Flange-mounted machine vs a foot-mounted quote
  • Geared unit vs a bare TEFC
  • Brake, Ex, or marine nameplate treated as a general-purpose YE3

FAQ

Do you supply ABB spare parts or reverse-engineered windings?

No. JW quotes IEC metric machines (Y2 / YE3 / YE4 and specials). A replacement is decided from the nameplate and shaft/feet, not from the ABB badge.

If the plate shows M2BA, M3BP and other IEC general/process-performance nameplates, is YE3 a drop-in?

Often the shaft height follows IEC 60072-1, so the base may not need machining. You still match kW, poles, shaft diameter and key, voltage, and foot vs flange. Process-performance or Ex / marine nameplates are not a standard YE3 quote. Match enclosure and duty first.

When will it not drop in?

Different shaft Ø or key in the same frame number; B5 flange vs B3 feet; a gearmotor vs a bare TEFC; Ex / marine / brake nameplates; a pole count that would change pump or fan speed.

Should I upgrade to IE3?

Use YE3 when the spec or energy policy allows it. Keep Y2 when the site must stay IE2. Do not jump to IE4 only because a comparison page exists.

What should I photograph?

The nameplate (kW, V, Hz, poles or r/min, frame) plus a side shot of feet or flange and the shaft. That is how we stop quoting the wrong shaft in the same H.
